BONAVISTA, N.L. — One man has died following an accident in which a vehicle drove over a cliff this afternoon, Aug. 7, in Bonavista.

According to a release issued by the RCMP, at about 12:30 p.m. today Bonavista police responded to a single vehicle crash near the Dungeon Provincial Park, close to Cape Bonavista.

The vehicle was observed driving over a cliff and ended up completely underwater with one man inside.

Ambulance and Fire Department were on scene with RCMP officers from both Bonavista and Clarenville detachments.

According to the release, Joint Rescue Coordination Center dispatched a helicopter from 103 Squadron in Gander which lowered search and rescue technicians into the water.

The man’s body was recovered and was transported to shore by the Canadian Coast Guard.

Efforts to retrieve the vehicle are continuing.

An RCMP Traffic Services analyst is en route. The office of the Chief Medical Examiner and police are continuing the investigation.
